Sten Pelzer
Sten Pelzer is a jazz trumpet/flugelhorn player from the Netherlands.
Inspired by great artists, he formed his concept on playing. You can hear influences from both modern and original players in his playing and repertoire. From Chet Baker and Miles Davis to Chris Botti and Till Brönner, all great inspirations. “For me the most important thing in music is sound. My main focus is creating a warm, round and open sound”.
Sten studied jazz trumpet at the conservatory of Maastricht with Rob Bruynen (WDR Bigband & Skymasters) and Carlo Nardozza (Brussels Jazz Orchstra & Otomachine). He also had lessons from the Dutch lead trumpet player Nando van Westrienen.
Sten started playing trumpet at the age of 8 years at the local fanfare in his hometown. After a few years of playing classical related music, Sten started studying trumpet with the Dutch jazz trumpet player Hub Boesten. This inspired Sten to focus on jazz. From that moment on, he also took trumpet lessons with Marc Huynen, another Dutch jazz trumpet player. A few years later Sten decided to become a professional jazz artist and began his study at the conservatory of Maastricht.
As a soloist, performer and section player Sten preformed across Holland, Belgium and Germany. He played in different orchestras (Bigband Boesten, Score Jazz Orchestra, Luca Bigband & Fringe Orchestra) and combos (Sten Pelzer Quintet). He also enjoys playing in smaller ensembles (Sten Pelzer Trio). He worked with a lot of great musicians and followed several workshops/masterclasses (including John Clayton, Dennis Mackrel, Fay Claassen, Jesse van Ruller and Ack van Rooyen). On top op that he played at some prominent (jazz) festivals (including North See Jazz, Jazz Out, Leuven Jazz and Heerlen Jazz).
Sten enjoys playing in front of an audience as a soloist, but he also likes playing in a horn- section and working with other musicians. Also sharing his knowledge about music with others and teaching are important and rewarding for him. Apart from that, Sten also works as composer and arranger.
His main focus for the future is creating his own sound, writing new music and arrangements and share his knowledge with others.
